This week in logistics News (November 28

This is the "Pajama Day" at my daughter's first grade class. As a reward for doing a good job the past few weeks, students have to choose between holding a party pizza, watching movies, or wearing Pajamas to school. After much lobbying and debate, advocates for Pajama day won, and my daughter are proud to walk to school this morning wearing her best book ever SpongeBob SquarePants.

Like most software vendors this year, Descartes continued to post strong financial results. Revenue was 10 percent in Q3FY11 compared to the same period last year, and up 17 percent year-to-date. United States accounted for 44 percent of revenues, followed by EMEA (20 per cent, including Belgium), Belgium (16 percent). America (including United States and Canada) accounted for only 1 percent of income.

Latin America has always represented the smallest segment of the market as a whole, and TMS despite strong growth potential, a piece of cake does not seem to grow very much. Why not? A question to ponder and address in a future post. If you are a software vendor, post comments and share Your experiences/perspectives.

Almost three years ago in "understand why companies outsource logistics," I discussed the State of logistics outsourcing in the healthcare industry. Here's an excerpt:

Study: Medical Marijuana Laws do not encourage children to smoke more Pot

Despite warnings from opponents of medical marijuana, legalize drugs for medical purposes does not encourage teens to smoke more marijuana, according to new research that compares the price of marijuana use in Massachusetts and Rhode Island after the state change of the law.

Rhode Island passed a medical marijuana in 2006, but not Massachusetts. "We want to pair the two countries since they have so many geographical and cultural similarities," said Dr. Esther Choo, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School and an emergency medicine physician in Rhode Island Hospital.

Choo's deep passion analysis used data collected from 1997-2009 for the Centers for Disease Control and prevention's youth risk behavior survey. The analysis involved nearly 13,000 youth in Rhode Island and about 25,000 in Massachusetts. In each country in a given year, the study found, about 30% of teens reported using cannabis at least once in the previous month.

In other words, while marijuana use is common, there is no significant difference in the price of the pot between the years before and after legalization in Rhode Island. "We found no effect of change in policy," said Choo.

These results are consistent with the 2005 analysis done by Mitch Earleywine, Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York-Albany, for marijuana policy project. He found that between 1996-when California passed a medical marijuana law — and 2004 the previous month, the pot used by ninth graders dropped by 47%. It is a little steep decline than seen nationally during the same period, and found a similar effect Earleywine on all medical marijuana States that he attended.

The two companies compete a little on the market of online advertising but Microsoft customers on Facebook. "This research is independent from Microsoft," said lead author Danah Boyd, who is on staff at Microsoft Research and Research Assistant Professor in the media, culture and communication at New York University.
